San Diego Habitat for Humanity (SDHFH)

Services Provided: Financial/Basic Needs, Housing, SDMFC Members

San Diego Habitat for Humanity is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and serves San Diego County.  It is an autonomous 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  It is governed locally, raises funds locally and builds locally.

The Mission: San Diego Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Habitat was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent and affordable home to live in dignity and safety.

The Program: Habitat’s programs create homeownership opportunities for low-income families in need of improved housing.

Habitat homeowners qualify for the program by showing a demonstrated need for improved housing, a willingness to partner with Habitat by committing to 250-500 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build their own homes, and the ability to repay an affordable mortgage.

The Volunteers: In order to build these homes, Habitat utilizes approximately 5,000 volunteers each year.  Anyone who is willing to lend their time and energy can help build a home.  When a volunteer works side by side with a future homeowner, they learn the true story of the need for affordable housing and of the strength and perseverance of their neighbors.  They learn that it is easy to change lives by spending some time in the sunshine, learning new skills and making new friends.

ReStore: Habitat operates ReStores, home improvement retail centers in Mission Valley and Escondido, open to the public, that accept donations of new and used materials, selling them to support operating and building costs. This social enterprise venture benefits the community both fiscally and environmentally. Low-cost home improvement items are offered to the public while keeping useable appliances and building materials out of our landfills.

Programs for Veterans: Serving Those Who Have Served Us

Habitat provides new home ownership opportunities for veterans, as well as critical health, safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency repairs to veterans who already own their homes.
