January 23rd is National Reading Day and we’re promoting literacy by sharing our favorite reading resources for military kids!

National Reading Day post

United Through Reading

United Through Reading helps ease the stress of separation for military families by having deployed parents read children’s books aloud via DVD for their child to watch at home. Learn where you can participate in the program by clicking here.

Books on Bases – Blue Star Families

Books on Bases was created by Blue Star Families to positively impact the lives of military children through the power of reading. With the generosity of partners and supporters, Blue Star Families donates books to military children, base libraries, Department of Defense schools, and military-impacted public schools and libraries. Events include a Summer Reading Campaign, Month of the Military Child giveaways, and World Read Aloud Day.

San Diego Local Libraries

Did you know that there are close to 40 public libraries in San Diego County? Many have a full calendar of children’s programs, including Pajama Storytime & Crafts, Toddler Yoga, and Music & Movement.

9 Must-Read Books for Military Children

Veterans United compiled a list of the 9 books written for military children and their unique experiences of growing up. They are mostly geared toward younger children, but some are also great for teenagers. Books on the list include “My Dad’s a Hero”, “The Soldiers’ Night Before Christmas”, and “My Mommy Wears Combat Boots”.

Operation: Military Kids Reading List

A great list of books for military kids from birth through high school graduation. A fantastic collection. Grab one, share quality time with your kid, and start a discussion based on the book.

Sesame Street Workshop

While this reading resource also includes “interactive” reading and video, it’s a great tool to help your military kid get through difficult periods of transition and separation that inevitably come with military family life. Their partner website, Military Families Near and Far, helps families create, communicated and stay connected through mobile apps, downloadable PDF’s, coloring books and video.
